A mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted a drive at ‘Salema Hospital and Lab’ in the city’s Rayerbagh area on Sunday afternoon.
The court sentenced a fake doctor couple of the hospital to two years’ imprisonment and fined Tk two lakh each on the charge of cheating with the patients.
It also fined Tk one lakh each of the two other nurses and sealed off the hospital.
The RAB’s Executive Magistrate AHM Anwar Pasha passed the order after a short hearing.
The convicted fake doctors were identified as Rabiul Aual, 43, and his wife Momataz Begum, 23. Sonia Akter, 22, and Lutfunnahar, 28 were identified as fake nurses, RAB official said.
The mobile court, led by RAB headquarters executive magistrate AHM Anwar Pasha, conducted the drive at Salema Hospital and Lab .
During the drive it was found that the couple had long been cheating with the patients in the name of doctors although they are not physicians. Parvez Hossain Dipu, 16, and Liza Akter, 23, patients of the hospital were facing badly physical complications and no genuine doctors were present during the drive, they alleged.
Later, the mobile court arrested them and jailed them for violating the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) Act. The mobile court also sealed off the clinics and seized its all valuables.
The hospital did not have any real nurses, they just had dresses of the nurses, whereas all hospitals are supposed to have two nurses for every 10 patients, officials said.
They had no resident doctor either, relying on specialists brought in from outside. Moreover, they did not have many of the equipment that hospitals are supposed to have, they added.
