Illegal hill cutting is going on in Sylhet region creating severe risk of sudden landslide, alleged locals. Since the start of the monsoon, a number of minor landslides occurred at different part of the district, though no casualty was reported. During winter and dry season, a group of unscrupulous businessmen used to cut the hills for collecting soil and leveling the land for construction works, sources concerned said.
As a result, landslide is causing during the monsoon, injuring many persons. Concerned authorities, however, are completing their duties making people aware about probable landslides through mike announcements during the monsoon instead of taking steps to stop the indiscriminate hill-cutting.
In reply to a query, Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Kazi Emdadul Islam admitted to Bangladesh Post that the district administration actually have no list of risky houses at the hilly areas. According to sources, there are many risky hill areas in Sylhet, which may trigger landslide during the downpour.
The worst suffering areas to the unabated hill cutting are Khadim nagor, Bangal tilla in Kanighat,Gupal tilla, Gupi tilla Major tila, Tultikor, Tukerbazar and Jalalabad area, sources said. District administration informed that there are two upazilas in a vulnerable position during the monsoon. The one in Sylhet Sadar upazila and another is Companiganj upazila, where many people died in a landslide earlier.
Adv Shaheda Akther, a Sylhet coordinator of BELA said, the landslide cause only for hill cutting in Sylhet. She urges the concern authority to take the legal action against the offender.
However, it was reported that many labor also died during the hill cutting in earlier. This callous act cannot stopped for lack of government’s monitoring as well as public awareness. Sayyed Ahmed Chowdhury, In-charge of Sylhet Met office said, Sylhet hills are the different from Ctg hills in various issues including its sand quality. So, landslide incident may occurred any time during monsoon.
