Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has resumed the eviction drive for the second consecutive day on Monday to demolish the multi-storey building constructed by occupying the banks of original Buriganga river at Kamrangirchar in the capital.
On Monday morning, BIWTA officials and the executive magistrate of the district administration took part in the operation in Kalunagar mouza.
Earlier, on Sunday, they evicted about 32 illegal structures, including a two-storey building, and recovered two acres of encroached land on the river.
Executive Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman conducted the eviction drive.
BIWTA’s Dhaka River Port Director Gulzar Ali said that evictions were being carried out in Kalunagar mouzas of Kamrangirchar at all sides of Dhaka city to increase the navigability of the river as per the High Court order.
He said, many multi-storied buildings, residential establishments and business establishments have been built illegally on the river side since more than two decades.
In 2019, BIWTA started a campaign to rescue four rivers in Dhaka and evicted around seven and a half thousand illegal establishments. Several development projects including walkways and tree planting have been taken up in the evicted areas.
Besides, work is underway to enhance the beauty of Lake Road including installation of permanent boundary pillars on both sides of the river Buriganga.
Meanwhile, the walkway has become visible on the banks of the Turag River.
The construction work of the walkway is also starting from the part of Kamrangichar of Buriganga river at the beginning of next month.
