Illegal drug trading unabated in Sylhet

Illegal drug business has been going on unabated in Railway station area of Dakshin Surma upazila of the district. According to sources, various kinds of drugs, including phensidyl, heroin and ganja, are being smuggled into the country from India by some youths. Women are also being involved in this criminal activity. They sell drugs here and also send them to different parts of the country, A large number of youths, students, day labourers, rickshaw-pullers and drivers are drug addicts in the area. Most of the addicts come to Railway Station from different areas of the district.
Julhash Islam, a local resident, said the route — Old Rail Station, New rail station, Tarminal, Kodomtaly, Gotatikor, Pulermukh, Chadnighat, Bharthkhola area in Dakshin Surma upazila – is used for smuggling of drugs. It is alleged that a section of dishonest people is engaged in smuggling under the nose of law enforcement agencies.
Sources said the smugglers come at Rail Station with the smuggled drugs and send those to other parts of the country through the trains. BGB men are conducting their drives in different areas of the upazila and arresting smugglers and peddlers along with drugs. Officer-in-Charge of Dakshin Surma Police Station said police is also active in anti-drug drive.
