Sylhet Bureau :
Illegal CNG stands here and there in the city have now become a cause of severe traffic congestions as well as immense sufferings to the commuters.
As several organizations of the government are working hard to mitigate the traffic jam in the Sylhet city, illegal stands of CNG, laguna, tempo and other three wheelers at different places grabbing significant portions of busy roads and footpaths exacerbate the situation.
An influential quarter is behind these illegal activities in connivance with local law enforcement agencies.
Though, officials of Bangladesh Road Transport Authorities (BRTA) Sylhet term those stands illegal, they are not taking any action against the involved for unknown reason. Putting the blame on the traffic police,
BRTA officials said, “It is not our duty. Traffic police are responsible for it. They should take drastic action in this regard.”
Whereas, Traffic Division of Sylhet Metropolitan Police claimed that, they are playing flexible role in this regard as there are no sufficient and suitable places in the city for such stands.
Huge number of laguna, three wheelers and tempos are plying on different city roads without following any rules and regulations.
Even, they don’t have legal permits or papers. However, people are being forced to use such vehicles for their movement for lower fare, small size and availability. Taking the advantage, police realize illegal tolls from these.
Riajul Islam, a government official said, “Such illegal vehicles are main reason behind the severe traffic gridlock in the city. If these were operated from specific terminals, people would not suffer so.
“He suggested that, Sylhet city corporations’ authorities should bring the matter into their notices.
Dulal Ali, a CNG driver said, “All including police and political leaders realize money from us. We pay Tk 700 as toll every day at different points.”
Gulam Kibria Commissioner of SMP said, “The authorities concerned should take necessary initiatives right now to establish designated terminals for such transports to bring the traffic system in discipline.
Otherwise, it will not be possible to control the traffic congestions of the Sylhet city anyway.”
