UNB, Comilla :
Assuring that she herself will be there on the streets with them this time, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on
Saturday urged people to get ready for a decisive movement as Awami League’s fall is imminent.
“The fall of Awami League looms… there’s no alternative to movement. You’ll have to endure some pain before good days to come. I’ll be there on the streets with you in the same line this time and will see how police open fire,” she told a huge public rally at Comilla Town Hall ground.
Khaleda claimed said she is on the movement to save the country and its people, and restore democracy, voting rights and ensure people’s security instead of going to power.
She also urged people to get united and join their upcoming decisive movement when she will call to get rid of the current ‘illegal, repressive and killer regime’. “We want unity and cooperation from all. Boycott Awami League. The breeze of change has started blowing across the country….and development, democracy and progress will be ensured after the change.”
Asking police to stop shooting on people, Khaleda said, the government will not be able protect is illegal power by firing shots on people.
She was very critical of the law enforcers, particularly Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), for what she said their indulgence in criminal activities and killing innocent people.
Reiterating her demand for the disbandment of the elite force, Khaleda also asked the government to arrest RAB second-in-command Col Ziaul Ahsan to stop killing and abduction.
Khaleda reiterated her call for foreign countries not to train police forces and sell arms, ammunition, teargas and explosives to them as those are being used against opposition leaders and activists, common people and for students killing and making them disappeared.
She also called upon the United Nations not to hire police and RAB members for its peacekeeping missions abroad.
Accusing Awami League of having failed to rein in the leaders and activists of the party and its wings, including Chhatra League and Jubo League, Khaleda said the ruling party men
are indulging in extortion, looting and other criminal activities.
Terming Awami League and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Inu) killer parties, Khaleda said the killers grabbed power with the help of each other and established a reign of killing. “There’s another killer, Ershad. Today, Hasina is surrounded by the killers as she has joined hands with all killers.”
The Awami League-led government has got isolated from people, she said, adding that the ruling party is unwilling to quit power as it knows it very well that people will smash the party men once it is out of power.
She alleged that Awami League is staging dramas over militant issue and the party is trying to get sympathy of foreigners by branding Islamic scholars as militants.
Claiming that corruption has been the current regime’s basic principle, Khaleda said the country is now under one person’s grip. “Now the country is not only a one-party rule, but also under exploitation and ruled by just one person.”
She said ruling party ministers, MPs and leaders and activists have engaged in widespread plundering of public money and graft.
Branding the Anti Corruption Commission as an ‘impunity commission’, the former Prime Minister said the commission has been giving clean chit to the corrupt leaders and activists of the ruling party at the behest of the person (PM) who is controlling everything.
Terming parliament an illegal and unrepresentative one, Khaleda said, “This parliament has no right of passing bill as its members are unelected.”
Referring to PM’s adviser HT Imam’s recent remarks about the January-5 election, she said the adviser has divulged how Awami League manipulated the election to grab power illegally.
“HT Imam is also the Imam of Hasina. He had been removed from service for his involvement in corruption during Pakistan regime… He is now playing dirty games to keep Awami League in power illegally.”
The BNP chief claimed the government should step down immediately following HT Imam’s remarks.
She asked the ruling party to hold a fresh election under a non-party administration if it thinks people are with it for their good works.
Khaleda said Awami League only talks tall about democracy and development but acts against it.
Slamming the Prime Minister for her remarks that the BNP chairperson has been living like a fugitive in fear of trial of the corruption charges brought against her, Khaleda asked Hasina to face the cases filed against her during the army-backed caretaker government.
“Some 8,000 cases were filed against them, including 15 ones against Hasina. She bought Mig 29. It was a corruption…Hasina might have been convicted on those cases. I want to know why had withdrawn those cases? You should face those cases through a neutral court, then we’ ll see how much courage you have,” she said.
Khaleda alleged that Hasina had compromised with the 1/11 masterminds— Fakhruddin Ahmed and Moyeenddind Ahmed-to skip the charges of cases and to cling to power.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday at a meeting of the Awami League Working Committee at Gonobhaban said, “She (Khaleda) terms others corrupt but she herself is living like a fugitive. She is not attending court hearings in the case filed on charges of misappropriation of funds meant for orphans.”
Khaleda regretted that though her government had initiated development of Comilla city, an old and traditional city, Awami League-led government stopped it after assuming office.
The former Prime Minister assured that if her party is voted to power again in the future, they will turn Comilla into a modern city.
Started her journey for Comilla from Gulshan residence around 10:20am, Khaleda reached Comilla Circuit House around 2pm.
The local unit of the BNP-led 20-party combine organised the rally as part of its countrywide mass campaign to create a solid ground for a decisive movement to force the current administration to quit and arrange a fresh inclusive election.
This was Khaleda’s 9th district tour after the January-5 election boycotted by the BNP-led opposition alliance.
