Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque on Monday said that he has requested the Election Commission (EC) to hold the elections of three city corporations — Dhaka City Corporation (North and South) and Chittagong City Corporation — by April 30.
He made the request while calling on the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed at his office to
discuss the law and order situations in the country.
“I requested the CEC to hold the election of three city corporations by April 30 because Pakistan national cricket team is scheduled to visit Bangladesh after April. It would be difficult for us to perform electoral duties during the Pakistan cricket team’s visit. The CEC said he would consider my request,” he told the journalists after meeting the CEC.
IGP said he also suggested the CEC of holding the elections of three city corporations on separate days. But the EC is likely to hold the elections in a single day, he said.
Giving details of his discussion, he said the CEC wanted to know the present laws and order situation in the country.
“I told him now the situation of the country is normal. We are capable of giving all kinds of assistance for conducting the elections,” Shahidul Haque said.
“Once the election schedule is announced, there will be a different atmosphere centering election in the cities. People will concentrate on the elections then and the things will get better,” he added.
