Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque instructed the Police personnel not to club the citizens while discharging duties against lawbreakers.
“Some people have no respect or rule of law. Police can detain them for violation of law. If the crimes are not of serious nature, then police can release the accused at the police station, obtaining undertaking from the guardians. However, if the crimes are severe, police will take legal action against the hem. But police can never physically beat the offenders in their custody, because assault of the citizens is not their duty,” the IGP said.
The police chief said this in a press briefing at Police Headquarters on Sunday afternoon arranged ahead of the Police Week-2016.
The IGP says ‘sorry’ for the fault committed by some of Police personnel in excess and for acting contrary to the spirit of the force.
“But we have zero tolerance for he law-breakers and are punishing the offenders.”
He said that in the last five years, some 709 police officers went to the courts against departmental actions.
“The court restored 293 police officers in their previous position. This proved that we did not back up the wrongdoers,” Shahidul Hoque said.
