The election to the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), the apex body of the country’s professional engineers, was held on Thursday amid boycott by most candidates.
Candidates and voters claimed that the election was arranged in an unfair manner as a good number of votes were cast on the Wednesday night.
They said, the election commission failed to conduct the IEB election in a transparent manner.
Sources claimed that the supporters of the Awami League backed panel led by Nazrul Islam and
Mamunur Rashid physically tortured the rival candidates and voters in order to win the election.
Aminur Rashid Chowdhury, a candidate, said that he went to the IEB to collect his card on Wednesday, but he was suddenly attacked for unknown reason.
All the candidates and supporters except the Awami League boycotted the election and organized a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club yesterday.
The BNP supported panel withdraw from the race in protest and held a press conference detailing the reasons of boycott with appeal to save the institute from disorder.
