IDB to provide $ 89.3 m to improve water supply, sanitation

 The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) will provide $ 89.3 million to Bangladesh to improve water supply, sanitation, drainage, and solid waste management in 23 selected Pourashavas of the country.
The Jeddah-based lending agency will fund a project titled ‘Water Supply, Sanitation, Drainage, and Solid Waste Management in Small Pourashavas’ to be implemented with an estimated cost of Tk 1011.85 crore.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has already approved the project and the Department of Public Health and Engineering (DOHE) has been entrusted to implement the project.
Talking to UNB, an official at the Economic Relations Division (ERD) said that the draft project agreement between Bangladesh and IDB is awaiting approval of the Law Ministry and thus approval of the Prime Minister.
The official also said that IDB approved its $ 89.3 million funding for the project in its 307th Board of Governors meeting last year.
“Hopefully the credit agreement on the funding between Bangladesh and IDB would be signed by this year,” added the official.
The official also said that out of the $ 89.3 million funding, the IDB would provide $ 79.3 million as non-concessional loan while the rest of $ 10 million as soft loan.
The 23 selected Pourashavas to be covered under the project are Alamdanga, Chatkhil, Dohar, Godagari, Kanaighat, Madhabdi, Monirampur, Muladi, Nabinagar, Shayestaganj, Shibganj, Ajmiriganj, Bashurhat, Benapole, Belkuchi, Birganj, Dhamrai, Sherpur, Ulipur, Gobindaganj, Boalmari, Ghatail and Jagannathpur.
