Islami Development Bank (IDB) handed over 11 School-cum-Cyclone Shelters in the seventh phase of the Fael Khair Program in Bangladesh on Tuesday. The fund for the program was donated by the Late King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz. 3 shelters at Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila and 8 at Raipur Upazila were handed over.
The handing over ceremony was held at UNO office, Raipur Upazila and was presided by the UNO. Program Director of Fael Khair Program, IDB Sufee Mustaque Ahmed, Project Director & Liaison Officer from LGED Mohammad Rezaul Karim and Project Director of Fael Khair program, from IMC Mr. Richard Langford Johnson were present during the ceremony.
The School-cum- Cyclone shelters were handed over to the UNO & keys were handed over to the School Committees.
The handing over ceremonies were attended by the Upazila Chairman, representatives of Primary and Secondary Education, Education Engineering Department, Local Government Engineering Department, School Management Committees and local community leaders.
The number of buildings that have been handed over so far is 127 out of a total of 172 School-cum-Cyclone Shelters of Fael Khair Program.
This handing over event paved the way of utilizing the state-of-the-art facilities incorporated in these shelters, fulfilling the long cherished dream of the local people. Each building, apart from serving as a modern educational institution for 240 students, will also provide shelter to 2,000 people and 500 heads of cattle during cyclone that afflict Bangladesh time to time. It is to be recalled that King Abdullah Rahimahu Allah had requested not to reveal his name when he donated this generous grant of USD 130 million for providing relief and assistance to the victims of cyclone Sidr.
The fund comprises (i) USD 110 million for the construction of a number of School-cum-Cyclone Shelters in the coastal belt of Bangladesh; and (ii) USD 20 million in Waqf program to provide urgent relief and rehabilitation in the form of agricultural and other inputs to the affected population.
The schools-cum-shelters have been designed to withstand storm wind speed of 260km per hour.
These facilities are designed as green buildings, equipped with solar power, beacon lights, durable school furniture and potable water supply system, including rain water harvesting which will provide safe drinking water in this saline belt where potable water is very scarce, especially during calamities.
