Training workshop on safe migration held: ID cards for children to reduce unsafe child migration stressed

 A three-day non-residential training workshop for local actores and stakeholders on safe migration concluded at Narsingdi Sadar upazila auditorium on Thursday.
Organised by Ovibashi Karma Unnayan program(OKUP) with the assistance of European Union Funded programme, a total of 30 man and woman including entrepreneurs of UISCs, women members of union parishad, retired school teachers, journalists and officials of the local Manpower office took part in the training workshop.
The training workshop was designed for capacity building and skill development for the participants as they would create and raise awareness among the grass root level people on safe migration.
The training workshop was conducted by the chairman of OKUP Shakirul islam, project officer Abdullah al Mamon and other resource personals of OKUP
OKUP works with the potential and returning workers specially women and youth and provides information on safe migration process, relevant laws and rights, legal support, raises public awareness social arbitration to recover money from middlemen and skills training..
It was discussed in the workshop that many Bangladeshi migrants workers employed overseas fall victim to exploitation by recruit agencies or their foreign employers due to their lack of knowledge about the migration process and labour laws and rights. The workshop also discussed that about 8.5 million people are working in about 159 countries across the world.and now every year a good number of Bangladeshis are migrants to different countries for job.The Bangladeshi migrants workers are playing an imprtant role in the country’s economic development contributing to the foreign exchange and the country received a total of US Doller 58.39 billion remittance during the last five years.
Barisal Correspondent adds: An inauguration of distribution of identity cards of the registered at the risk to migration and migrated children held at Barisal Circuit House on Monday calling to introduce the system country-wide.
The programme was organised by Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association (BNWLA) under its Rural Urban Child Migration Project (RUCMP) with technical and financial assistance of European Union and Save the Children International.
Advocate Salma Ali, Executive Director BNWLA, presided over theprogramme conducted by Nafis Imtiaz Hasan, coordinator RUCMP.
