UNB, Dhaka :
A defence counsel for war crimes accused ATM Azharul Islam on Wednesday moved a plea before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 seeking remedy for branding his client as human beast by a prosecutor, undermining the self-esteem of the accused.
Before beginning the defence case summing-up argument, Barrister M Shishir Manir, standing on his legs, moved the plea.
A day before, while closing the prosecution case summing-up arguments, designated prosecutor Dr Tureen Afroz made the remark on 1971 war crimes accused Azharul as human beast.
Moving the plea, barrister Shishir came down heavily on Dr Tureen for her ‘unkind’ remark on his client and said she has contravened the professional code of conduct prescribed in the Bangladesh Bar Council, the statutory body regulating the lawyers.
Such remark also amounts to contempt of court and it goes against the proceedings of the tribunal, he contented.
The defence counsel said the remark has been widely publicised through both the print and the electronic media, including radio and television, undermining the self-esteem of his client.
