Meer Iqbal Hossain, a member of the prosecution team under the International Crimes Tribunals dealing with the 1971 war crimes cases, tendered his resignation on health grounds, sources in the prosecution told UNB on Sunday.According to the sources, ICT prosecutor Iqbal, who had been enjoying the status of deputy attorney general and joined the prosecution team on April 29, 2012, remained absent for long due to poor health.During his tenure, Meer Iqbal failed to perform his professional function as assigned by the chief prosecutor to deal with the war crimes case against Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami, now condemned. Later, the assignment was given to prosecutor Mohammad Ali.Earlier, on August 7, the government removed prosecutor Omar Khaiyam M Saiful Islam on charge of misconduct as he did not return home from the USA after the expiry of his sanctioned leave in April this year. Following the resignation of Iqbal and removal of Omar, the number of ICT prosecutors now stands at 20.
