Staff Reporter :
For the first time, the probe committee of International Crimes Tribunal [ICT] has concluded the final report against a former Pakistani Army Captain Md Shahidullah for his alleged crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
Investigation on three specific allegations against Captain Md Shahidullah, 75, a Bangalee officer who worked for Pakistani Army, has been completed. The report would be placed before the Chief Public Prosecutor of ICT.
Coordinator of the investigation agency of ICT Mohammad Abdul Hannan
claimed this at a press conference in the city’s Dhanmondi area on Tuesday. The investigation was conducted by ZM Altafur Rahman that started on October 11, 2015.
“The accused Shahidullah had worked for Pakistani Army during the Liberation War. He used to introduce himself as a Captain. He came to his home district Comilla from West Pakistan in 1971. But he did not return there [West Pakistan],” Abdul Hannan said.
According to the Investigation report, the Pakistani Army Captain was Commander of a Pakistani camp at Daudkandi High School at that time and did not join the Bangladesh Army after the country’s independence on December 16, 1971.
Elaborating the crimes, Abdul Hannan further said: “After returning, he set up a camp in Comilla and started detaining and torturing innocent people. At the same time, he had also become involved in abduction, looting, arson, killing and other crimes against humanity.”
The three allegations, of which the investigation reports have been finalized, are: 1) Shahidullah had detained a pro-Liberation War physician Habibur Rahman on June 7, 1971. Later, he killed Habibur Rahman after severe torture in a Pakistani Army camp and dumped his body in the Gomti River.
2) On June 16, 1971, Shahidullah along with 40/50 members of Pakistan Army detained and tortured 20 villagers attacking Chengakandi and Golaper Char villages under Uttar Union of Daudkandi.
Shahidullah’s gang set fire on five houses after looting all valuables from there. Later, he freed 19 out of 20 detainees, and shot dead the rest one. Later, the body of the victim was dumped in the Gomti River.
3) The members of Pakistan Army guided by Shahidullah had attacked Daudkandi Bazar on July 21 in 1971. They detained a man named Kala Mia from there. Later, they shot and killed Kala Mia behind Tanjina Hospital and dumped the body in a nearby canal.
On August 2, 2016, Shahidullah was arrested from his residence at Golaper Char village under Daudkandi upazilla in Comilla, within hours of issuing an arrest warrant by the ICT-1. The tribunal sent Shahidullah to jail on August 3, 2016 when police produced him before the tribunal.
In fact, the genocide in Bangladesh had began on 26 March 1971 with the launch of Operation Searchlight, as West Pakistan began a military crackdown on the then East Pakistan to suppress calls of the Bangalees for self-determination rights.
As per an estimation, during the nine-month-long war for independence, members of the Pakistani military and supporting Islamist militias from Jamaat-e-Islami killed up to 3,000,000 people and raped between 200,000 and 400,000 Bangladeshi women, in a systematic campaign of genocidal rape.
Many of those killed were the victims of radical religious paramilitary forces formed by the West Pakistani Army, including the Razakars, Al-Shams and Al-Badr forces, according to Wikipedia.
