The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on Thursday expressed its discontent over continuing trial proceedings against a deceased person and asked to investigate to find out the culprits behind the blunder.
“Trial cannot be continued against a deceased as it is illegal. The tribunal has asked the prosecution to look into the matter to find out culprits,” said senior prosecutor Syed Haider Ali.
A private TV channel recently aired a report saying the trial of crimes against humanity is going on against Md Waz Uddin of Mymensingh, terming him as absconded.
The tribunal on December 11, 2016, framed five charges of crimes against humanity against Waz Uddin and his partner in crimes Reaz Uddin Fakir. But according to that TV report, Waz Uddin actually died on May 7, 2016, seven months before the indictment.
Meanwhile, ICT registrar Shahidul Alam Jhinuk told the newsmen that only yesterday
Mymensingh police sent a report to the tribunal saying the accused has died on May 7, 2016.
“Earlier we had no clue about his whereabouts or condition. The tribunal has nothing to do with this.
It is the fault of those people, who are entitled to arrest the accused,” said the registrar.
According to the prosecution, Waz Uddin was an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami in 1971 and subsequently joined local Razakar Bahini when the war began.
