ICT-1 sentences fugitive Jabbar unto death for war crimes

International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on Tuesday jailed fugitive Engineer A Jabbar of Pirojpur, a former MP of Jatiya Party (Ershad), unto death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971. The tribunal also sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment with a fine of Tk 10 lakh for forced conversion of Hindus to Muslims during the Liberation War. Both the sentences will run concurrently, said the tribunal. Justice M Enayetur Rahim, chairman of the three-member tribunal, pronounced the summery of its 8th judgment, containing 141 pages, at 12:10pm in a crowded courtroom, after 82 days of closure of trial. The two other members were Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Anwaqrul Haque. With today’s pronouncement of the judgment, ICT-1 and ICT-2 have so far delivered 17 verdicts since their formation in March 2010 and 2012 respectively. — Dhaka, Feb 24 (UNB)
