The motivated Kiwis thrashed Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in their first match of the ICC World Cup Cricket at Cardiff in Wales on Saturday.
Chasing Sri Lanka’s fragile total of 136 off 29.2 overs, New Zealand stormed into the victory spot in 16.1 overs making 137 for the loss of none.
Opener Martin Guptill of New Zealand remained unbeaten with 73, while Colin Munro remained unbeaten with 58.
Guptill hit eight fours and two sixes in his 51-ball innings, while Munro cracked six fours and one sixes in his 47-ball knock.
It was Guptill’s 36th ODI half-century, while it was Munro’s ninth ODI fifty.
Earlier, Dimuth Karunaratne was the only batsman of Sri Lanka, who resisted the tight and controlled bowling attack of New Zealand.
Karunaratne hit a captain’s knock of 52 (not out). He hit four fours in his 84-ball innings.
It was Karunaratne’s 4th ODI half-century.
Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry played the key role in demolishing Lanka’s innings.
Ferguson and Henry grabbed three wickets each instead of 22 and 29 runs respectively.
Besides, Mitchell Santner, Grandhomme, James Neesham and Trent Boult took one wicket each for 5, 14, 21 and 44 runs respectively.
Matt Henry was adjudged the Man of the Match for his superb bowling performance.
