International Cricket Council is set to investigate the altercation between Bangladesh and India players following the finale on the ICC U19 Cricket World at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom, South Africa on Sunday.
The occasion of Bangladesh’s historic three-wicket [DLS] win over four times U19 champions India was marred with players of both the team engaging in exchange of words. There was also pushing between the players on the field which had eventually left a Bangladeshi flag damaged.
As per reports, ICC is to take the issue “seriously” and that a fuller update is due from the match referee, Graeme Labrooy, on Monday.
Bangladesh U19 captain Akbar Ali was sorry for the event while his Indian counterpart Priyam Garg had put all blame on Bangladesh team at the post-match press conference.
“What happened, it should not [have] happened. I don’t know what exactly happened. I didn’t ask what was going on. But, you know, in the final, emotion can come out, and sometimes the boys were getting pumped, and emotions were coming through. As a youngster, it shouldn’t happen. In any position, in any manner, we have to show the respect to the opponent, we should have respect for the game,” said Akbar who was key to Bangladesh’s emphatic win with an unbeaten 43.
“Cricket is known for being a gentleman’s game. So I’ll say, I’ll be sorry for my team,” the wicket-keeper batsman added.
India U19 captain Priyam claimed that Bangladesh players had started the menace at least following the game.
“We were easy. We think it’s part and parcel of the game – you win some and you lose some. But their reaction was dirty. I think it shouldn’t have happened. But it’s okay,” said Priyam at the post-match press conference.
The exchange between players of the teams is believed to be a result of the row that had ran throughout the game on Sunday. Harsh send offs following dismissals and exchange of words particularly between the batsman and bowlers were common scenarios.
An official reaction is due to the ICC on the players’ actions. It is understood that ICC officials will scrutiny footage from the event to find the reason and those guilty for the incident.
