England defeated Bangladesh by eight wickets in their second Group-1 match of the ICC T20 World Cup at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday.
Electing to bat first, Bangladesh made a modest total of 124 for the loss of nine wickets in the stipulated 20 overs.
In return, England overhauled the winning target in 14.1 overs scoring 126 for the loss of two wickets only.
Bangladesh faced an early debacle as they lost their early three wickets for 26 runs.
Opener Mohammad Naim was dismissed for four runs, Liton Das, the other opener was removed for nine runs and Shakib Al Hasan was sent to the pavilion for four runs.
After Shakib’s departure, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad fought back contributing 37 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Mushfiqur Rahim was trapped leg before wicket by Liam Livingstone when Bangladesh’s score was 63 for the loss of four wickets. Mushfiqur Rahim scored 29 runs only with three fours in his 30-ball innings.
After Mushfiqur’s dismissal, Bangladesh batters failed to make any notable partnership.
Mahmudullah Riyad, Nurul Hasan Sohan and Mahedi Hasan added 19,16 and 11 runs respectively to the Bangladesh total.
Number-9 batsman Nasum Ahmed remained unbeaten with 19 runs. He struck two sixes and one four in his nine-ball knock.
Tymal Mills captured three wickets in the space of 27 runs, while Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali bagged two wickets each instead of 15 and 18 runs respectively.
Besides, Chris Woakes took one wicket for 15 runs.
England made a fine start with two openers Jason Roy and Jos Buttler scoring together 39 runs in the opening stand before Buttler (18) was caught at the long-off by Mohammad Naim off Nasum Ahmed.
After Buttler’s departure, Jason Roy and Dawid Malan added together 73 runs for the second wicket partnership before Jason was caught by Nasum Ahmed off Shoriful Islam when England’s score was 112 for the loss of two wickets. Jason hit a marvelous 61. His 38-ball innings saw three sixes and five fours and was adjudged the Man of the Match.
After Jason’s departure, Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow guided their team to reach the winning target.
Malan remained unbeaten with 28. His 25-ball knock had three fours.
Nasum Ahmed and Shoriful Islam took one wicket each conceding 26 runs each.
