I want to serve the people with sincerity and honesty

“It was my parents’ dream that their daughter would be Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) cadre. I was also so serious to fulfill their dream. Finally I have been recommended as BCS Cadre (admin) in 35th BCS examination. I thank Almighty Allah for selecting me in this post. I will discharge my duties after joining with sincerity and honesty. It is my determination that I will never involve in corruption and will fight against it. Even I am ready to dedicate my life in the interest of the country. I will work to create awareness among the women so that they make themselves skilled and qualified.”
Sharmin Akter who stood first in the 35th BCS examination, said this while talking to The New Nation recently. Staff Reporter of The New Nation M M Jasim took an interview of Sharmin.
Sharmin Akter was born in a Muslim family in Shariatpur on 6 November in 1986. Her father Akhter Hossain is a businessman and mother Mahmuda Akhter is a house wife. Her husband Jaher Alam is a businessman. She is the mother of a daughter and a son.
Sharmin Akter passed Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination from Tejgaon Government High School in 2002 and Higher Secondary School (HSC) from Dhanmondhi Ideal College in 2004.
She admitted in Marketing Department of University of Dhaka. Popy passed BBA and MBA from Dhaka University successfully with 1st class marks.
She joined National Bank in 2013 and now performing her duties as Senior Executive Officer in Karwan Bazar Branch.
The New Nation: You are a BCS cadre (recommended) now. Why chose BCS?
Sharmin Akter: BCS is an attractive job. Not only today it was prestigious even during British and Pakistan period. BCS cadres have many responsibilities. They also can contribute in nation building activities. That is why I have chosen it.
The New Nation: Who inspired you to be BCS Cadre?
Sharmin Akter: It was my mother’s dream that her daughter would achieve this. My mother always insisted me to take preparation to sit in the examination. Even after getting bank job she continued her attempt. After my marriage my husband provided his helping hands and supported me a lots. It was impossible to be BCS cadre without my husband’s positive initiative. I am grateful to both of my mother and husband. I never forget them.
The New Nation: why you have chosen admin?
Sharmin Akter: Actually I would like to do something for the people. I love my country and I have a dream to change it. There is no another cadre which can directly help to work for the people. I could provide my service to the people directly. Admin cadres have the executive power which they can use it to prevent corruption and other social menaces. That is why I have chosen admin cadre.
The New Nation: How you will tackle the challenges in the field?
Sharmin Akter: I know J Arnold Toyenbee’s Challenge and Response Theory where he mentioned that challenge may come any time and you have to get ready to face that. If you face it successfully you will be winner or you can survive in the society. So, our society has many problems and challenges will come when you will face the challenges. I am determined to serve the people. So I am ready to face any challenges. I will try my level best to overcome the challenges.
The New Nation: How much you love the country?
Sharmin Akter: It is very difficult to express. I can say that I can sacrifice my life for the sake of my beloved country.
 The New Nation: what is your plan for women empowerment?
Sharmin Akter: Almost half of the population of the country is women. It is impossible to develop the country except the women. It will be my first priority to create awareness among the women so that they can realise that they are also capable to do everything. I will continue my endavour until my death. I believe that the women of this land will prosper their life. they have to do this. We have also many examples such our honourable Prime Minister, Opposition leader in Parliament, Speaker and former Prime Minister are women.
The New Nation: What is your motto and pledge?
Sharmin Akter: my motto and pledge are to serve the people with honesty.
The New Nation: What is your suggestion for the students who want to be BCS cadre?
Sharmin Akter: BCS examination is no so hard. At the same time it not also very easy. Anybody can be BCS cadre if he or she is determined, aware about time management, industries and commited for relentless endavour.
The New Nation: What is your call for the new generation?
Sharmin Akter: The new generation is the heart of a nation. They must be patriots. It is high time to make them as asset of the nation. It is equally important for the new generation to be determined, aware about time management, industries and committed for relentless endavour.
