Hypertension and heart disease are emerging as a serious health hazard in Bangladesh, said eminent cardiologist and National Professor Brig (retd) Abdul Malik on Thursday.
“Hypertension and heart disease are emerging as a serious health problem in Bangladesh and other developing countries. Among the heart problems, hypertension, ischaemic and congenital heart diseases are common,” he told a conference at a city hotel.
As a part of global initiative of SUN PHARMA to disseminate scientific knowledge among the medical fraternity across the globe, Sun Pharmaceutical (Bangladesh) Ltd orgainsed the academic conference in collaboration with American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD).
The objective of the conference was to disseminate knowledge among cardiologists about advancement of cardiology and help them enhance the standard of treatment in the field of cardiology in Bangladesh. Citing the findings of a latest survey on cardiovascular diseases carried out in Bangladesh, Malik said the prevalence of hypertension in adult population about 20-25 percent, ischaemic heart disease in adult population about 10 percent and congenital heart disease 8 percent in newborn babies.
No matter what the age, he said, everyone can benefit from a healthy diet and adequate physical activity to prevent the diseases. World renowned cardiologists Dr Andrew M Kates, Dr Paul M Ridker, Dr Glenn A Hirsch and Dr Navin Rajagopalan spoke on advancements in the field of cardiology at the conference held with NICVD director M Abu Azam in the chair.
They shared their valuable experiences on current research works, day-to-day clinical findings in the domains of cardiology, and discussed the latest updates on hypertension, heart failure, lipid management and acute coronary syndrome with more than 300 cardiologists.
