Staff Reporter :
Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haq has claimed that the banned Hizb ut-Tahrir is no threat to the country’s independence and sovereignty.
“We don’t think that Hizb ut-Tahrir is as fierce as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is,” said the IGP.
The Police boss made the remark at a press conference in the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Headquarters in the capital’s Uttara on Wednesday morning.
The press briefing was organized after printing of a report recently in the US-based journal titled ‘Counter Terrorism
Exchange’ which assumed that Hizb ut-Tahrir might become a violent organization in future in Bangladesh.”
The report also pointed out that the organization was continuing its activities deceitfully evading the vigilance of the security forces and intelligence agencies across the world.
The IGP Shahidul Haq said that law enforcers had already detained a number of ISIS activists and its country leader.
“We are trying to arrest all those who are linked to the unlawful organization, he claimed.
The all law enforcing agencies, including police and RAB, are always alert about the movement of the ISIS members and their aides.
When asked as to why innocent people are shot in their legs, Shahidul Haq countered, “How did you understand that they were innocent?” Whether a man is innocent or not, it is a matter of investigation, he said adding the law enforcers have rights to defend themselves if they come under attack.
To another query about the clue behind the bomb attacks across the country during the nonstop blockade and frequent hartal enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance, Shahidul Haq claimed that the financers, planners and instructors had been identified with sufficient evidence. Many had already given confessional statements in the court under 164.
Before the press briefing, a close-door meeting was held in the elite force’s Headquarters with the commanders of 14 Battalion where RAB Director General Benjir Ahmed and the elite force ADG colonel Ziaul Ahsan, among others, were present.
