A housewife named Sadia Akhter Roxana (28) was strangled to death in Gaiyarpar Village under Pagla Police Station of Gafargaon Upazila on Friday. After the murder, Sadia’s body was left at home and her husband fled. The incident took place around 4:30 am on Friday. Later, Pagla police recovered the body at around 2pm and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Sadia Akter is the daughter of late Mofazzal Hossain of Makhal Sheikhvita village at this upazila. She got married to Russell Miah, 30, son of Keramat Ali of Khaiyarpar village five years ago. Sadia lived at her father-in-law’s house with her one and a half year old son Sanil and 6 month old son Sadib.
Sadia’s mother Ayman Nesha said her son-in- low Russell Mia had been pressuring her for money since six months of marriage. Russell often beat his wife, Sadia, for bringing money from his father’s house. Russell was involved in alienation. Russell often threatened to kill Sadia if she stopped him. Meanwhile, thinking of her daughter’s happiness, Sadia’s family periodically donated furniture worth at least Tk 10 lakh along with cash.
Halima, the younger sister, said that Russell started abusing her sister for money a few days after the marriage. They also beat Sadia a week ago. He would not stop beating and swearing in vulgar language.
Sadia’s husband Russell Mia was not found.
Pagla police inspector (investigation) Sumon Chandra Roy said there were marks of injuries almost all over the right side of the body’s neck. There are also marks of injuries on the chest of the deceased. The body was recovered and sent to the morgue. Legal action will be taken on the basis of the complaint of the victim’s family.
