The Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka on Monday sentenced husband of Rajshahi University’s former student Wahida Sifat, 27, to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment in a case filed for provoking Sifat to commit suicide in March 2015.
Judge Sayeed Ahmed of the tribunal pronounced the verdict in presence of husband, convicted Md Asif. The court acquitted Asif’s parents Md Hossain Ramjan and Najmun Nahar
Najli and Dr Jubaidur Rahman, Assistant Professor of the Forensic Department of Rajshahi Medical College, as the charges brought against them were not proved. Dr Jubaidur conducted the autopsy of the victim.
The court rebuked four investigation officers for their failure to unearth the facts of the incident. While delivering the verdict, the judge said prosecution has failed to prove the charges of torturing and killing Sifat for dowry.
Sifat, was a student of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department of Rajshahi University. She was found dead at her in-laws’ house in Mahishbathan area of Rajshahi city on March 29, 2015.
Victim’s uncle Mizanur Rahman Khandaker filed a murder case with Rajpara Police Station on April 2, 2015, accusing Sifat’s husband Md Asif, father-in-law Md Hossain Ramjan and mother-in-law Nazmun Nahar Najli on charges of torturing and killing Sifat for dowry.
Police later pressed charges against the trio and also included the name of Dr Jubaidur Rahman, Assistant Professor of Rajshahi Medical College for giving a “false” autopsy report of the victim, saying her death as a suicidal one.
Senior ASP of CID Ahmed Ali, the Investigation Officer of the case, submitted a chargesheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Rajshani accusing the four persons. IO Ahmed Ali said, after a long investigation, police found that Sifat did not commit suicide rather she succumbed to her injuries.
The case was later handed over to the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka which began the trial on November 11 last year.
The couple, has a two-and- a half-year-old son.
