Jakia murder: Husband, 3 others get death penalty

A Dhaka tribunal yesterday sentenced a man and three others to death for killing his wife in Gopalganj in February 2016.
The convicts are- Morshedayan Nishan, his brother Ehsan Shushan, brother-in-law Mohammad Hasan Sheikh and Manager Anisur Rahman.
Of the convicts, Shushan, Hasan Sheikh and Anisur Rahman were present in the court during the pronouncement of the verdict. However, husband of the victim Nishan has been on the run after he was granted bail in the case.
On January 13, prosecution and defense completed their arguments in the case and the court cancelled the bail of other three accused and sent them to the jail while the prime accused was on the run.
Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal -2 Judge Md Jakir Hossain pronounced the verdict in presence of the three convicts on Thursday. The court recorded the depositions of 20 prosecution witnesses, including the complainant of the case.
According to the case statement, housewife Jakia Mallik was mercilessly beaten by the convicts for dowry at their house on Silna Road at Bedgram of Gopalganj on February 5 in 2016. Being informed, police rescued Jakia and admitted her to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital. Later she succumbed to her injuries there.
Later, victim’s father Jalal Uddin Haji Mallik filed the case with Gopalganj Police Station in connection with the incident. Police arrested Nishan and three others in connection with the murder. But Nishan went into hiding after court allowed him bail in the case.
Nishan married Jakia in 2006 and they have a child. The accused were torturing Jakia, and she was tolerating everything in the interest of child. The accused claimed Taka one crore from Jakia to buy a flat for him in Dhaka while the victim refused it. They were torturing the victim as she could not fulfill their claim of dowry.
