The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has launched a drive against the tax evaders with the objective of expanding tax net.
The number of the country’s eligible tax-payers is about 30 lakh, of whom only 12 lakh pay tax regularly, sources said.
NBR has formed special teams on February 1 to detect the tax evaders and directed its regional offices to take care of corporate institutions, multi-national companies, group of companies and tax evading business establishments.
Many housing companies and big businessmen of the city are under surveillance of a special team of the organisation. The special teams have been directed to launch drive against the organisations, which did not come under audit, sources added.
An official of NBR seeking anonymity told this correspondent that the NBR has experiences of frequent incidents of tax evasions in the past. None would however, be able to evade tax this year, he said adding that the officers were however, asked to see to it so that regular taxpayers are not unnecessarily harassed. There was evasion of Tk 108 crore tax in 2009-10 fiscal year as against Tk 31 crore in 2010-2011. The amount of tax evasion in 2011-2012 was Tk 48 crore, the NBR source said.
