Human trafficker killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

A suspected human trafficker was killed in a gunfight with members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police at Pashchim Sonapara in Ukhiya upazila early Sunday. The deceased was identified as Zafar Majhi,38, son of Jahir Ahammed, a resident of the area. Officer-in-charge of DB police Dewan Abul Hossain said tipped off that a gang of human traffickers was staying in the area to send some people to Malaysia, a team of the DB police conducted a raid there at about 3:30 am. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the human traffickers opened fire to police, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight. Zafar was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot. Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Two policemen were injured during the gunfight.
