Local residents of Lamchhari, the village of philosopher Araj Ali Matubbar under Charbaria union of Barisal, formed human chain on Wednesday morning to save the area from river erosion.
‘Darshanik Aroj Manjil Public Library’ organised the programme in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall in the city-center.
The programme was presided over by Shah Azizur Rahman Khokan, president of the library.
It was addressed among others Aiub Hossain, member secretary ‘Amra Bachtey Chai’, Advocate A K Azad, district CPB president, Harun-or-Rashid, United Communist League leader, Advocate Tarun Chanda, AL leader, S B Babul, NAP leader, Prof. Biren Roy, finance secretary of Gano Natya Sangstha, Shahim Matubbar, Anis Matubbar, Jalil Goldar, Wahedul Talukdar, Golam Rasul Molla, Shaon Matuttabar, local residents.
The speakers said rapidly advancing Kirtankhola River erosion in the area endangered the road communication link with other parts of the city and existence of Lamchhari village.
The condition of road from Taltali Bazaar to Lamchhari also very severe and tidal-bore, river-surge often engulfing the village and surrounding areas damaging housings, crops, communications, fish farming, the affected locals alleged.
The participants demanded construction of embankment, ring dams, piling for checking advancing river erosion and saving the people of the village inclined with the memory, residence and grave of philosopher Araj Ali Matubbar, relief and rehabilitation help for the affected people.
After the human chain, the participants also handed over a memorandum on same issue to the district administration.
