Human chain to save Karnaphuli Paper Mills

A human chain on Saturday urged the government to save the state-owned Karnaphuli Paper Mills (KPM) from being shut down, for the greater interest of the country’s education.
The human chain, organized by “Save KPM Movement” a platform of offspring of former employees of the mill feared that the paper business would be monopolized by the private paper industries once KPM is shut down. Over 200 people attended the programme held in front of Chattogram Press Club.
Those who come from lower income families would face hurdles to continue their education once the cost of paper goes up, he said.
The Government must take initiative to save KPM — riddled with corruption and mismanagement, he added.Maksud Rumi, former officer of KPM, said crores were spent in the name of renovation and yet, KPM over the years lost its production capability.
.Advocate Jahangir Alam, former student of KPM High School, said there are at least 1,27,000 acres of land which will be “mismanaged” once KPM is shut down. “We urge the government to save KPM at any cost, for the betterment of education,” he added.
Auto-rickshaw thieves held: Detective Branch of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) arrested two CNG-run auto-rickshaw thieves in the Chalitatali area under Bayazid police station on Saturday early morning.
The arrestees were identified as M Rubel, 28, son of Nurul Haque’s and M Saheedul Islam, 21, son of M Nizamuddin both are hailed from Chalitatali, Bayazid.
Asif Mohiuddin, Additional Deputy Commissioner (South) of city Detective Police said, on a tip-off Detective police conduct a drive in the morning and arrest two thieves along with a stolen auto-rikshaw.
He said,the thieves used to steal auto-rickshaws through new techniques.
After stealing auto-rickshaws they would contact the owners and demanded money, he added.
Over 200 illegally erected houses evicted: Bangladesh Railway (East Zone) authority evicted over 200 illegally erected installations from CRB areas in the city on Thursday afternoon.
 Divisional commercial officer of EZ Ansar Ali told that 30 acres of Government land recovered from illegal processions by evicting the unauthorized houses from CRB.
Sources said evict drive will be deployed on October 9 nest Pahartali areas .
