Human chain in three districts to save Bidi industry

Bidi cultivators, producers and consumers on Monday formed human chains in Bandarban, Rangpur and Coxbazar, demanding measures to save Bidi industry against the ‘conspiracy of multinational firms to terminate the cottage industry’, says a press release.
In Coxbazar, Bidi Consumers Group organized human chain in front of Sahina Akhter Chowdhury MP’s house in Ukhia. Organization’s President Kabir Hossain, General Secretary Mainuddin and Organizing Secretary Nur Hossen, among others, spoke at the program. After the hour-long chain, they handed over a memorandum to the MP.
Bidi Consumers Group of Bandarban region formed a human chainin front of Hill Tracts Affairs Minister Bir Bahadur Ushe Sing’s house in the afternoon. Group’s President Mostakim Jony, Organizing Secretary Nasiruddin, Organizing Secretary Remong Marma and other members joined the program.
District Tobacco Farmers and Businessmen Samiti held a press conference at Rangpur Press Club. Samiti’s President Mahbub Alam, General Secretary Mizanur Rahman, Organizing Secretary Nurul Islam Lavlu, farmer leader Lutfor Rahman, business leader Akram hossain and Abul Kalam Azad, among others, spoke at the conference.
Discussants rang their voices louder to press home seven-point demands that includes (1) revoking all taxes imposed on Bidi industry, (2) like Bidi industry in India, the Bidi industry of Bangladesh should be declared as ‘cottage industry’, (3) foreign cigarettes must be banned from the country, (4) conspiracies to terminate Bidi industry must be stopped, (5) Steps to keep lower Bidi price should be taken, (6) as long as there are cigarettes in the country, the bidi industry will remain and (7) addressing discriminations between cigarette and Bidi industry.
