Human chain in Rangpur to withdraw ban on battery-run vehicles

Leaders of various rickshaw-van drivers’ organizations in Rangpur have given an ultimatum to withdraw the decision to stop the operation of battery-powered rickshaw-vans by next Sunday. Labor leaders also warned of a morning-evening strike in Rangpur on Tuesday if the government withdraws its decision and their 11-point demand is not met. Earlier, leaders of rickshaw-van drivers’ organizations staged a human chain rally.
Tofazzal Hossain Tofa, organizing secretary of the Jatiya Sramik Party’s central committee and general secretary of the Rangpur Metropolitan Jatiya Charger Rickshaw-Van Driver’s Union, warned of a strike at a press conference at Shapla Chattar in Rangpur on Thursday afternoon.
Shyamal Babu, General Secretary of Jatiya Charger Rickshaw-Van Workers Union, Abdul Majid, President of Mahanagar Charger Rickshaw-Van Jatiya Sramik Party, Anisur Rahman Anish, General Secretary of Jatiya Rickshaw-Van Sramik League, Pirgachha Upazila among others spoke at the press conference. Charger Rickshaw-Van Workers Union General Secretary Abdus Sattar Mamun and others.
The demands raised include auto parking and charger rickshaw stands in proportion to the number of autorickshaws and charger rickshaw-vans at special places in Rangpur metropolis to reduce traffic congestion. The campaign should be run by miking before the police operation.
Metropolitan Traffic Police, City Police and Auto Rickshaw, Charger Rickshaw-Van Workers’ Association Stop police harassment on the road, ensure punishment for those involved in various crimes including theft and robbery and create opportunities for workers to participate in the meetings of the law and order committee.
