Several hundred pro-sculpture demonstrators took to the street in the capital city in favour of setting up the sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Saturday.
People from different professions including local representatives were holding a human chain at Dholaipar intersection crossroads of the city.
The protest program started around 10 am on Saturday.
Taking part in the human chain, the leaders said that the vested fanatical group will never be able to erase the history of the freedom struggle of the country.
Some pro-liberation political organizations, including the people’s representatives of Jatrabari-Dholaipar area, called for this demonstration in order to resist-the opponents who are against construction of the sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Jatiya Party leader and MP Syed Abu Hossain Babla organized the human chain at Dholairpar crossroads.
Member of Parliament of Dhaka-5 constituency Kazi Monirul Islam Manu along with activists and leaders of some Islamic parties took part in the protest.
Addressing the opponents who are obstructing Bangabandhu’s sculpture construction, the speakers said, “People will resist them if they take part against the history and tradition of the country.”
There is a debate over the constructing of sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dholaipar intersection of the capital.
Earlier on November 13, senior Naeb-e-Amir Mufti Syed Mohammad Faizul Karim of the Islami Andolon Bangladesh and Mamunul Haque, Acting Secretary-General of the Bangladesh Khilafat Majlish, opposed setting up the sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Though clearing his party’s position over the issue Maulana Mamunul Haque, newly elected Joint-Secretary General of Hifazat-e-Islami, said that their statement was just against sculpture and not against Bangabandhu in any way.
He said, “I fully respect the great leader and architect of Bangladesh’s independence Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as a Muslim leader and pray for salvation of his departed soul.
