The students of Hatiya Upazila in Noakhali district formed a human chain yesterday in front of the National Press Club to protest the closure of 10 schools at Harani Union. They have also demanded immediate opening of those schools.
According to eyewitnesses, several hundred students formed the human chain under the banner of ‘Hatiya Chhatra Forum-Dhaka (HCFD)’. Forum President Somir Uddin and General Secretary Ibrahim Mesbah were present in the programme.
The speakers of the programme said, “In twenty years, there have been constructed a large number of educational institutes in Hatiya on the lands lying unclaimed for years. But recently the land grabbers have begun to forcibly occupy those lands, doing harm to general people without any reason, damaging their property and destroying educational institutions.”
The speakers have urged district administration and the Education Ministry to take measures to recover the school lands from the grabbers as soon as possible, so that the students can return to school.
Convener of Hatiya Zila Bastobayon Parishad Advocate Fazle Azim Tuhin, Joint-Convener Mahmudul Hasan Meshkat and Director of Projanma Hatiya Abu Saleh Mohammad Saad, among others, spoke in the programme.
Earlier, the students submitted a written complaint to the Home Ministry and Ministry of Primary and Mass Education on Thursday in this regard.
It was learnt that the men of Chargazi Union Chairman Towhidul Islam Sumon locked 10 schools expelling teachers and students on April 21. As a result, about 2, 500 students have been suffering a lot and they are anxious about their future.
