Directorate of Environment (DOE) in Chattogram seized one tone of banned polythene shopping bags after conducting a drive at a polythene-manufacturing factory in Chararkul area under Hathazari upazila of the district on Saturday.
However, none of the owner or employees were present during the drive.
On receiving information, a team of Department of Environment (DoE) led Director Azadur Rahman Mollick, conducted the drive at the factory and recovered the polythene bags, said Songjukta Das Gupta, Assistant Director of DoE.
The DoE also sealed off the polythene-manufacturing factory and summoned its owner Jashim Uddin for hearing at its office.
According to Bangladesh Environment Preservation Act (Amended 2010), the punishment of production, importing and marketing of polythene is upto two years’ imprisonment or Tk 2 lakh fine or both for the first time offence. For the second time,it is two to 10 years’ imprionsment or Tk 2 to 10 lakh fine or both.
