Huge cash, gold, arms recovered from two AL leaders’ houses

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Tuesday raided the houses of two Awami League (AL) leaders in the capital’s Old Dhaka area and seized Tk 5 crore in cash, 720 tolas of gold ornaments and five firearms.
The two leaders are Vice President of the AL Gandaria unit Enamul Haque Enu and his younger brother and Joint General Secretary Rupom Bhuiyan, who stayed at the separate apartments of the same building.
Enamul is now abroad and his younger brother Rupon, is now on the run, RAB official said.
As part of the ongoing crackdown against casinos, the elite force conducted the drive at a house of Enamul, also a “shareholder” of Wanderers Club, in Banianagar area around 10:00am, said Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, Senior Assistant Director of RAB’s Legal and Media Wing.
Tk 1 crore in cash, 720 tolas of gold ornaments, three shotguns and two revolvers were recovered from three vaults from the two flats of the house,
One of the flats belongs to Rupam Bhuiyan, a younger brother of Enamul, a Vice -President of AL Gandaria upazila unit.
Meanwhile, the RAB members also raided the house of Enamul’s employee Abul Kalam in Dholaikhal area and recovered Tk 2 crore in cash from a vault there, said Lieutenant Colonel Shafiullah Bulbul, Commanding Officer of RAB-3.
The RAB members recovered Tk 2 crore in cash from a vault in the house of Wari Thana AL Vice-President Harunur Rashid, a close ally of Enamul, on Sharak Gupta Road in Narinda area around 3:30 pm.
RAB sources further said, Enamul purchased the five vaults from a shop on English Road a few days ago. The elite force conducted the drive following information of purchasing the vaults.
He said they have recovered around Tk 1.04 crore and gold ornaments weighing 720 bhori (8kg) from the house in Gandaria in the morning
Quoting Bangladesh Jewellers Samity, the RAB-3 CO said, the current price of one bhori gold (22 karat) stands at Tk 56,662. The price of one bhori gold (21 karat) is Tk 54,500.
Shafiullah Bulbul said: “We came to know that they were shareholders of the casino in Wonders Club. They even brought home the dividends they earned from the casino the previous day.”
“We also have information that they bought five vaults (one kind of trunk) from a shop last Saturday. They recovered five firearms from the house, which the family claimed are licensed,” he added.
