'Militants' den busted in Ctg: Huge cache of grenades, ammo recovered

Police busted a den of militant outfit and seized a huge cache of grenades, bombs and ammunitions from a rented house of the Port city Chittagong early Wednesday.

At least 29 grenades, 40 bombs, 240 bomb-making materials and banners inscribed in ‘Allahu’ in Arabic letters and clothes were recovered from the rented house at Gobhania in Mirsarai upazila early Wednesday, police said, adding the weapons were hidden in the house in order to use in terrorist activities.

“Based on information extracted from the arrested Jashimuddin and Mohammad Hassan, who launched bomb attack on police during a raid in a bus of ‘Shyamali Paribahan’ on Dhaka- Chittagong highway in Khadghar area of Chandina upazila of Comilla district on Tuesday, grenades and ammunitions have been recovered,” Nur-e-Alam Mina, Superintendent of Chittagong Police briefed the journalists on the spot.

Two suspected militants-Hassan, 30, and Jashim, 32, were arrested from Chandina upazila in Comilla while hurling bombs at police. Police also arrested Hassan’s sister and bother-in-law in Comilla hours after the attack.

“Hassan and Jashim were said to be the followers of a group of international militant organisation. But identity of the outfit militant organisation could not be known yet,” he said, adding during interrogation, police got information that there are more nine members in the gang, including women, though three have already been arrested.

He said a special squad of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police raided the house.

“Introducing himself Mohammad Kamal and a clothes trader, Hasan rented the house from Rizwan, 47, owner of the two storied building in Mirsarai. However, police have sealed off the flat,” Nur-e-Alam said.

When contacted Sairul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirsarai Police Station, said a bomb disposal team of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) are now on the spot in Mirsarai Sadar upazila to defuse bombs.

“Apart from cops, members of elite force Rapid Action Battalion are also on the spot to conduct more drives,” he said.

Sheikh Md Neyamat Ullah, Officer-in-Charge of Patiya Police Station said members of different law enforcing agencies also raided at Shantir Haat and Talatola Chouki area in Patiya Sadar upazila on Tuesday night.

Earlier, on Tuesday, miscreants hurled a bomb at police during their drive in a Dhaka-bound bus of ‘Shyamali Paribahan’ on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Khadghar in Chandina upazila of Comilla district.
