A poor housewife is languishing on the floor of Nilphamari 100- bed Hospital yesterday as relatives of a union parishad (UP) member picked up and beat her mercilessly on Monday evening as protested their bid to brand her son as a thief and tortured him.
The victim has been identified as Anwara Begum (36) , wife of Abed Ali, a day labourer of Monshapara village of Sadar upazila.
Locals informed that the bi-cycle of one Babul Hossen, a resident of the village was stolen on last Friday and he informed the matter to influential Motiar Rahman, younger brother of local Kundopukur UP member Asgar Ali.
Motiar without any investigation blamed victim’s teenaged son Anwarul Islam (14) for this theft and subsequently, the cycle owner and his men beat him mercilessly to recover the cycle making him seriously injured though no bi-cycle was found from him.
Father of the boy admitted him in the hospital for treatment on the same day on last Friday where he took treatment for two days.
Victim Anwara Begum lying on hospital floor said that the false blame and subsequence torture on son shocked her very much and on Monday evening while Motiar was going elsewhere through a road beside her house, she came near him.
” I protested as he falsely branded my son as thief and tortured him so cruelly though we earn bread at the cost of honest bread,” she further said.
At this, Motiar became furious and called his relatives with cell phone who instantly reached the spot, she added.
In chocked voice she reported that Motiar’s relatives Razzak, Hannan, Alamgir, Anwar and some others picked up me and took to Razzak’s house 250 meters away from the spot and beat me mercilessly making me almost unconscious.
Victim’s husband Abed Ali said being aware of the matter, he rushed to the spot to recover the wife but he was also beaten severely.
Both of them admitted in Nilphamari 100-bed hospital on the same night with severe injury and their treatment was going on.
Attending nurse Sharifa Akhtar Sharmin said that the housewife has injury on chest and other parts of the body and it would take some more days to be cured.
Concerned UP member Asgar Ali on contact said that the housewife slapped his brother while going elsewhere after saying prayer and the allegation of beating the housewife by his brother was a blunt lie.
Preparation was on to file a case while writing this correspondent was writing this report.
Shahjahan Pasha, officer in charge of sador police station said that he would take action after receipt of victim’s written complain.
