UNB, Laxmipur :
A young housewife was allegedly strangulated to death by her husband and his family members for dowry in Terbeki area of the district town early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Bilkis Begum,18, wife of Abu Taher.
Quoting locals, police said Bilkis, daughter of Jahangir Alam, a resident of Terbeki, had been married to Taher, son of Tofael Ahmed, a resident of Uttar Tumchar village in Sadar upazila, three months back.
Taher had been demanding dowry from Bilkis’s family since after their marriage and he often used to torture her for this.
Taher called Bilkis out of her father’s house over phone in the dead of night and they picked up a quarrel over the same issue.
At one stage, Taher along with his family members strangulated Bilkis to death and later dumped her body in a pond.
Local people spotted the body of Bilkis floating in the pond on Saturday morning and informed police.
Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Taher and his family members went into hiding after the killing.
Sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station Azizur Rahman confirmed the murder.
