A young housewife was beaten to death allegedly by her husband and in-laws for dowry at Binsara village in Tarash upazila on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Ayesha Khatun, 20, wife of Shariful Islam, a resident of the village.
Tarash Police Station officer-in-charge Ataur Rahman said Shariful, son of Abdul Ohab Molla, had married Ayesha, daughter of Aminur Islam, a resident of Penguari village of the same upazila, thirteen months ago.
After their marriage, Shariful demanded Tk 1 lakh as dowry from Ayesha’s family and often tortured her in this connection.
As a sequel, Shariful and his family members beat Ayesha mercilessly on Sunday afternoon, leaving her dead on the spot.
Later, they hanged the body of Ayesha from the ceiling of the house to claim that she had committed suicide.
Informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Aminur Rahman, the victim’s father, filed a murder case with the police station.
Police arrested Farida Begum, the deceased’s mother-in-law in this connection.
