A house was torched while several others were vandalised in a clash over establishing supremacy between two factions of Awami League at Hatgopalpur bazar in Sadar upazila on Saturday night.
Syed Nizamul Goni Litu, chairman of Padmakor Union Parishad and former chairman of the same Parishad Bikash Biswas had been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy in the area for long, said Kanak Kumar Das, additional superintendent of Jhenaidah police.
As a sequel to the enmity, the supporters of Bikash Biswas swooped on the houses of the supporters of Litu chairman around 10 pm and vandalised five shops and ten houses in the area.
They also looted valuables from the houses and set the house of one Anar Ali afire, he said.
On information, a fire fighting unit went to the spot and extinguished the blaze after half an hour.
None was injured in the attack, according to witnesses.
Meanwhile, a tense situation was prevailing in the area following the incident.
Additional police have been deployed to avert further trouble, said the police official.
