Inhabitants of Harikhali Asrayan Project in Terokhada Upazila of Khulna district have been living subhuman life due to vulnerable condition.
On a recent spot visit, this correspondent came to learn that 24 houses had built under the project with a view to rehabilitate the landless people. 240 families live in these houses. But the condition of the houses became vulnerable as the houses were not renovated since long. Fences and roofs built with tins are now in a dilapidated condition. Helpless and landless persons along with their family members have been living in these houses amid risk and by enduring unbearable sufferings without getting any other alternatives. Cats and dogs enter the houses through the broken tin-made fences.
The inhabitants of this Asrayan Project use only 24 latrines which are not sanitary ones. II tube wells were set for drinking water and II pond were dug for bath. Children of the project houses play in the fields. But due carelessness and negligence, the inhabitants have been depriving of all kinds of facilities for long.
The river Atharobeki flows from the south part of the project. A few days ago, after excavating the river soils were piled adjacent to the houses. As a result the inhabitants face immense suffering piled soils enter into the houses and the inhabitants are falling in difficulties.
During the rainy season knee-deep water remains in the houses and as such inhabitants particularly of south side’s houses fall in great problem.
It is also learnt that among the inhabitants of this houses under the Asrayan Project conduct their livelihoods by riding rickshaw vans, catching fish, cultivating lands of other persons, rearing cows, goats and by giving labor as day-laborer Female persons sew kantha, some of them work as house maids and say the works of day laborer.
Shefali Biswas, an inhabitant said, we are in great difficulties; tube wells are out of order, recently. Some houses were covered with soil which were excavated from the river and piled in front of some houses, we are living here with immense sufferings taking our children, she added
Md. Shafiqul Islam, another inhabitant of a house under the Asrayan Project said, ponds were filled from the river and as such the ponds became unusable. There is knee-deep water in the ponds now, but in the month of chaitra the ponds will be dried, we can’t catch fish now from the ponds.
Md Shahjahan Sheikh, another inhabitants said, tins of our house became spoiled which are not fit for use, we have been suffering acutely from drinking water and the toilets became unusable he added.
Md. Mofizul Islam Zumman, General Secretary of Terokhada Press Club said, the problem of the inhabitants of the houses under the Asrayan Project knows no bound, they really have been living here subhuman lives.
Md. Sharfuddin Biswas Bacchchu, Upazila Chairman of Terokhada said, we are trying our best for reducing the sufferings of the inhabitants under this project, after marking the problems. They will be solved as early as possible.
Md. Liton Ali, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Terokhada said, with a view to removing the sufferings of the inhabitants who live here, a demand note was sent to the concerned authorities for allocation, but yet to be gotten, demand note will he be sent again, he added.
