The body of a housemaid was recovered from a doctors house in Sylhet city on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Jannat Akter Lina, 14, daughter of Abdul Malik, of Batumara village of Companiganj upazila in Sylhet.
The victim’s family members said that she was tortured to death by the house owner and her family members and they tried to hide the crime saying that Lina committed suicide.
Lina’s elder brother Al Amin told reporters that his sister had been working as a domestic help in the residence of Jamila Khatun, head of the Gynaecology Department of Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical Hospital at Akhalia in Sylhet city, for several years.
My sister had complained earlier that the doctor and her family members used to torture her. They tortured my sister to death, she did not commit suicide, Al Amin said.
Physician Jamila Khatun, however, claimed that she rushed home in Surma Residential Area of Akhalia from her office at about 10:30am after receiving her daughters call over mobile phone that Lina committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at their house and then she informed the matter to police.
Kotwali police Officer-in-Charge Md Selim Mia said that they recovered the victims body at about 1:00pm.
A Marks of injury were seen at the lower part of the victims throat, he said, adding that the victim might have committed suicide according to the primary investigation.
The police officer said in the evening that the victims body was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination and a case of unnatural death was also filed with the police station in this regard.
