The hot spell now sweeping over the country will continue till June 10, Met office sources said.
The simmering heat coupled with frequent load shedding is causing untold sufferings to the city dwellers.
Meanwhile, many people, mostly old men and children, were admitted to different hospitals and clinics following sunstroke as an unbearably hot and humid weather persisted in the country for the last few days.
The people of the south-eastern region are the worst sufferers. Besides, people of char areas in Padma, Meghna, Jamuna and Brahmaputra rivers are facing a terrible situation.
Mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over Rajshahi, Khulna and Barisal divisions and the regions of Faridpur, Comilla, Chandpur, and Cox’s Bazar, an official of Met office told The New Nation on Thursday.
He said day temperature may rise slightly and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country.
On Thursday, the highest temperature 38.41 degrees Celsius was recorded at Jessore and the lowest 24.2 degrees at Ishurdi.
“It is not unusual. The country usually experiences hot spell during this month. And this heat wave will continue to sweep over Rajshahi, Khulna and Barisal divisions. Only with the monsoon setting in fully the current spell of heat wave would disappear,” said the Met office official.
“The heat wave has returned with full fury from Wednesday in the northwest and the southwest which may continue for some more time before the welcome showers begins with the arrival of the southwest Monsoon,” he said.
He added rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary squally wind is likely to occur at one or two places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Sylhet and Chittagong divisions and weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country.
