A Dhaka court has placed director of Alif Hostel Khorshed Alam on a one-day remand, in a case filed against the accused, for throwing out certificates, books and furniture of some students who could not afford to pay rents amid the Covid-19 pandemic in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.
A virtual court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Masudur Rahman passed the order after Kalabagan police station Sub-Inspector Md Biplob Hossain, also the investigation officer of the case sought a 3-day remand for interrogating Khorshed in the case.
Opposing the remand petition, defence counsel Md Anowar Hossain, submitted a bail petition and also filed a remand rejection petition before the court for his client but the court rejected the bail plea and granted one day remand after a hearing.
Two separate cases have been lodged in Kalabagan police station in this regard.
Sajib, a Dhaka College student, filed a case against his landlord Kanchan while another private university student, Sohan, filed a case against
owner Saikat and director Khorshed of Alif Hostel.
One of the evicted students alleged that he had left his JSC, SSC and diploma certificates behind, but now after the incident, he was unable to find them. Another student had desktops, laptops and many other important items inside a trunk. He too did not find his belongings.
Police arrested Alif hostel director Khorshed, but the hostel’s owner Saikat and the flat owner Kanchan had gone into hiding.
Earlier in April, a family including a two-month-old child was thrown out of their rented residence for failing to pay rent amid the coronavirus lockdown across in the country.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the landlord for throwing out her tenants (a family of five) who were unable to pay a month’s rent amid the coronavirus lockdown.
