State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Zahid Malek on Sunday said that hospitals must be punished if found conducting unnecessary caesarean operation in child birth.
“If any private hospital is found to conduct caesarean operation unnecessarily, it will be shut down. The recent data has shown that the rate of caesarean operation in the private hospitals is above 70 to 80 per cent. But it should not be more than 15 per cent,” the minister said while talking to reporters in the Secretariat.
“When a woman undergoes caesarean operation for giving birth to a child, she faces many problems.
In such circumstances, it is necessary to take tough action against those who opt for such kind of operation,” he said.
Zahid Malek said also, the ministry is working to control the matter.
“Already we have taken initiative to reduce the number of caesarean operations and if any private hospital conducts caesarean operation, it must be called for explanation. Besides, the reason of caesarean will be written in the form,” he said.
The State Minister for Health talked also about the programmes of the Safe Motherhood Day.
The government has taken different programmes including rally and discussion at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre, marking the day, he said.
He said there are about 4,000 family welfare centers and 30,000 satellite clinics in the country where mothers get adequate health services.
“About 15,000 nurses have been appointed to work for safe motherhood,” the minister said.
