Hospital authority has to stop baby abduction

THE recent abduction of one of the new born twins from the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) maternity ward gave us all another preview of the fast-declining face of society. According to reports, the baby was said to have been snatched away while the mother fed its twin, by a lady that had befriended the mother earlier. The good news is that the baby has been recovered easily as because the baby was not sold to baby traffickers.
Reports say that the baby’s abduction was caught on DMCH’s camera, which played a vital role in the investigation to find the culprit responsible for the kidnapping. Recovering the name and number of Parvin enabled RAB to track her down to Kalameshwar village in Gazipur. The question remains if police has become irrelevant for police investigation into such easily detectable crimes. RAB should show their efficiency in ending serious crimes such as killings by organised criminals thought to be protected by power people. According to reports, questions have not been raised as the circumstances of the crime, CCTV footage, suspects’ names and mobile phones and the arrest all suggested that the baby was indeed the stolen twin baby.
The DMCH has stated that they are taking necessary steps to ensure the protection of newborn babies and their mothers against thieves but also mentioned how the hospital is operating with staff only meant for an 800-bed hospital whereas DMCH is a 2450-bed one. We are not so eager to accept the reasoning of manpower shortage. It has become normal for government officials not to take their responsibilities seriously. The problem is sense of responsibility.
Ultimately the responsibility has to be borne by hospital authority and therefore, we are to blame the hospital authority of Dhaka Medical College of lack of vigilance. The allegation is there that babies are stolen under one pretext or the other. Public officials also have to be reminded that the people pay for the benefits they enjoy and they must serve the people diligently.
