Two family members have been arrested in connection with the alleged “honour killing” of a Narsingdi college girl Monira Begum.
The arrestees are Monira’s father Khorshed Alam and brother Sohel Miah, police said.
Police filed a murder case with Shibpur Model Police Station on Tuesday in this connection.
Monira, 18, was a second year student of Narsingdi Imperial College. Police recovered her decomposed body from a grave beside Sherpur Government Primary School on Sunday night. Police and local said, Monira had an affair with Nobel Miah, son of late Abdur Rashid of Jangalia Village of Ayubpur Union Parishad.
Nobel, who passed eight grades, was a textile worker.
Both of them have been maintaining a secret love affair over the last one and a half years which spread recently.
Monira’s family also came to know about the affair and asked her to leave the affair immediately.
Her father also gave her death threat if she does not break the affair.
But she refused to break up affairs with Nobel creating wrath to her father and brother. At one stage her father beat her up.
On October 24, Monira and her father engaged with quarrel leading to heavy beating by her father. As a result, she lost her sense and never regain.
Later, her body was secretly buried near their house by her father and brother.
As the absence of Monira came to the fore to her neighbours, they started asking her family about her but they failed to give any satisfactory answer creating an uneasy situation.
Later, the family suddenly left their residence creating a general sense that something was wrong.
As a bad smell spread after one week, locals informed police and they recovered the body from a grave.
Other members of the Monira’s family even could not cry due to fear of her father’s cruel behaviour.
The OC of Shibpur Police Station Syeduzzaman told The New Nation that the initial investigation suggests that the girl was killed following a family feud.
“But we need a broader investigation into the circumstances surrounding to Monira’s death to unearth the real cause behind the death,” he said.
Quoting locals, the police official said it could be an “honour killing” as the girl had an uneven relationship with a local man.
“We already nabbed victims’ father and brother from a relative’s house at Jangalia under Shibpur upazila on Monday. A case has been filed in this connection,” he said.
Meanwhile, teachers and students of Imperial College held a mourning rally on Tuesday demanding exemplary punishment to the killers.
Principal of the College Prof Md Ali Chowdhury, Governing body President Mahbub Ali Chowdhury, teachers Ashraful Haque, Arafat Khan, Omar Faruk, Kobir Hossain and many students were joined the rally.
