On May 17 in 1981, Hasina, who was newly elected as AL president, returned home from India after nearly six years in exile following the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members by a cabal of army officers on August 15, 1975.
However, Bangaban-dhu’s both the daughters — Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana — survived the attack as they were in Germany at tHat time.
Hasina was elected president of Bangladesh Awami League in her absence in the party’s national council held on February 14-16 in 1981. On her return home, Hasina was received at the then Kurmitola Airport in Dhaka by thousands of people defying rain and voicing their support for her and the party.
Awami League and its associate bodies marked the occasion in a befitting manner with a weeklong programme.
