Thousands of Dhaka city residents have been leaving the capital for their home ahead of the tomorrow’s 11th general election.
The home rush began on Thursday, as the election will be held on Sunday after two-day holidays at ancestral homes.
It is because a great number of voters will go homes exercising their franchise.
Rashed Iqbal, a banker, told The New Nation on Friday that he was going to Pirojpur on Sunday.
“Vote is like a festival to me. We can also meet with our dears and nears at the same time. But our main target is to attend vote festival,” he said.
Businessman Faruque Hossain said, he managed a bus ticket for going to his hometown in Dinajpur. He planned to go home only for election.
“I think casting vote is the fundamental rights for every citizens. We will elect our representatives in the Parliament as vanguard of us. We cannot escape such privileges. That is why I am going home,” he said.
People were seen gathering on all the exit points of the city. Gabtoli, Kamlapur and Sadarghat were teeming with outbound people since the morning.
The home-goers are expecting to enjoy happy times with their near and dear ones exercising their democratic rights to vote.
Around 20-25 lakh people will travel by roads, rail and rivers until Saturday to reach their destinations.
According to Urban Area Report 2014 of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, 1.41 crore people live in Dhaka.
Like the previous times, majority of the people will travel by road. Their trips are likely to be a little more comfortable this year than the previous times due to the long vacation. Besides, most highways are in better condition.
Transport operators, police and officials of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) hoped
that there would be less pressure on highways this year compared to previous years as holidaymakers would leave the city in a staggered manner. Similarly, there would be less hassle for train and launch passengers.
They estimated that over 10 lakh people would take buses while about five lakh trains and around five lakh launches.
